Autumn pallet sign

Before fall is over I want to share this craft that I made back in September (don't judge me... I know I'm late posting this).
So, all I did was get an old pallet, break it down, and then put it back together with varying heights, then screwed it together and cut a straight line across the bottom. I had a sample supply of beige paint from Home Depot, so I painted it. Then I free handed a tree in chocolate brown craft paint and stenciled on "autumn" in dark orange. A quick trip to micheals resulted in an awesome 1 lb. bag if miscellaneous buttons, which I attached to the tree like leaves, with hot glue.
Lastly, I sprayed the entire thing with a coat of sealant. I have had so many people come over and comment in it. Honestly, I was inspired by a random photo I saw online. The photo didn't have directions or a link to a blog that I could see so, I just winged it.

What do you think? Have you ever made something like this before?

Thanksgiving Sign

I guess it takes me around a month between posts before I think "wow, I really need to post something!" So here I am! :) I have an easy tutorial for you.

As I pulled out my fall decor, I realized that I didn't really have anything thanksgiving specific. So I tasked my husband with cutting out some different sized squares for me (he used mdf). He also used a router and beveled the edges. After a finished sanding he handed them over for me to paint.

We make such a good team! ;)

I decided to make a few thanksgiving signs to put up in my dining room. I just used some basic craft acrilic paint from micheals. I used stencils for the "be grateful" sign and then I just free handed the other two.

Once they were painted, I used Royal Coat Decoupage Hi-Gloss Finishing Spray to seal them and to help them last through the years. I highly recommend this finishing spray.

"Eat pie" "Be Grateful" "Gratitude ... Turns what we have into enough"

Here is a picture of them on my buffet table (My husband made that! Gosh, I love that man!) I tried to blur out my office so you didn't have to see the mess.

I hope you like the way they turned out! I look forward to hearing your comments/thoughts!

Until next time my lovelys!

The Adventures Never Cease

Oh my Lanta! I cannot believe it has been so long since I have caught up with all of you. It seems that I am always saying that! Sorry, once again, I have been out of town and then trying to get myself and the kids back into the swing of things has proven to be more difficult than I thought it would be.

Well, I thought I would quickly tell you about yet another fiasco that happened but this time it was while we were on vacation. I really was hoping that the adventures in mommyhood would take a break while we were gone. pahhh... ya right!

We were visiting my mother who lives in the Northwest. It was a lengthy trip, about 3 weeks, and it was much needed. I love my Mother. Seriously, like my best friend. In high school I may not have openly admitted that, but I'm an adult now, and I have no problems telling this to people. She is awesome! Super funny, stylish (but not in the "I'm holding on to youth" sort of a way, warm and inviting, and the life of the party. Love her!! Anyway, I hate that we live so far apart, and lengthy trips are just what I need when it comes time to go visit her.

One afternoon we decided that the kids would have so much fun if we took them on a ferry ride. My kids love all trucks, boats, planes, so we knew it would keep them entertained. We walked on and took the ride across to an island. Since the ride was much shorter then we thought it would be we decided to get off and find a park on the island and let the kids play until the ferry came back.

It all was working out beautifully. It was a gorgeous crisp fall day, mostly cloudy but no rain. The park was right on the beach so the kids lost interest in the toys and decided they would rather walk the beach and explore. As we walked the kids started finding things that they hadn't ever really seen before, like crabs, seashells, seagulls, drift wood, etc. It was like wonderland for them. Being in the desert you don't see much tree's and grass, let alone ocean and sea life! Corbin had decided that it would be grand to pick out a seashell to take home from our travels and give to Dad as a gift. I said that was a good idea but only a couple. Before I knew it his little hands and arms were full of shells! There were purple shells and blue shells, and large smooth white shells, and large white shells that were covered in barnacles. As I stood there watching him try and decide which shell he wanted to keep and which ones he could part with I felt that I needed to interrupt him. I looked at him and said that he could go ahead and put them all in my purse and we would take them all home to Dad. He was so happy and quickly shoved them all into my bag.

Before I knew it the day had come and gone. By the next morning I was tired and sleepily walking around my mothers kitchen preparing some breakfast (aka cereal) for the little monsters to eat/spill all over my mom's floor. As I went about my business I started to notice a strange noise. It sounded like snapping, crackling, and since I hadn't poured bowls of rice krispies I knew it was something else. I slowly and quietly stalked around listening intently for where this weird noise was coming from. I put my ear to the fridge... nothing. I put my head close to the dishwasher... nothing. I listened to the drain in the kitchen sink... Nada! What was making this sound?! As I got closer to the bar the noise seemed to become clearer so I knew I was on the right track. After a minute it became clear that whatever that sound was, it was coming from my purse. I opened it up and started listening to a sound that could only be described as... like, when you put pop rocks in your mouth and chew for a second and then open your mouth. It sounds like a symphony of pops.

And then it hits me, OH MY GOSh!!! THE SHELLS....THE SHELLS ARE ALIVE IN MY PURSE!! Why hadn't this occurred to me at the beach?! Heaven knows I wouldn't have put them in my purse if I would have thought I could wake up to this! I was scared to grab them. (Don't laugh it that... I really was scared of my purse filled with hissing shells!) I got a paper towel, as if the thin paper product that was between me and the shell would act as a shield and protect me from being bitten. LOL I started grabbing out shells and putting them on the counter.

Now I could see that it wasn't all of the shells that were making this noise. It was only the ones with the barnacle's. They were alive and the barnacle's looked like little open mouth's with tongue's stretching out of them and then sinking back into itself. Now what, I kept asking myself as I was shrieking and trying to figure out what to do with them. Any normal person would have probably thrown them in the garbage or something. But Corbin was behind me wailing, "No, don't throw them away Mommy! They're for Daddy! Don't throw them away!"

So naturally the next best option was to try and get them to die off so that I could bring them home. I opened up an ice chest that was conveniently on the kitchen floor from our camping trip the weekend before and tossed the shells in! Next step? Pinesole.... yup lots of pinesole! I didn't know what else to do and was in a panic. Hindsight is 20/20 and I can think of several things that would have been better then an ice water Pinesole bath.

After a couple of days I went to check on the shells. I opened the lid of the ice chest and caught a whiff of the pinesole, saltwater creature mix and closed it right back up. At this point I didnt care if they were alive or dead.... I wanted nothing to do with them. After being back home for a few days I heard that my mother had encountered the mess left in her cooler. Poor woman! She is braver than me!!

Until next time lovely's

Boo! Halloween candlesticks

I have a cute Halloween tutorial for you. Last night I made these cute things. I'm not quite sure what to call them. I wanted to call them "BOO Apothecary jars" but they don't have tops to the and I added candles to them. So I guess we are going to go with "BOO! Halloween candlesticks".

Now, in my opinion, I think if you were to see these in the store then you would easily pay $20 for them. It doesn't seem like you can many decorative glass holiday products for less then that. But you CAN make these for $6, and I'm going to show you how.

1.  I picked up three glass candlestick holders at the dollar store.

2.  I painted them black with some good ole craft paint.

3.  Once they were dry I gave them all an even coat on "Deco Art- Triple Thick" glaze.

4. While that was drying I printed out some letters to use as stencils for my jars/vases. Then I cut them out.

5.  Next I grabbed my three dollar store vases. I used my painters tape (you can do this with whatever tape you want. or you can do it a completely different way) to make an even line all the way across the vases so that I wouldn't have wonky letters.I traced my stencils on with washable maker (thank you kids art supplies) and then filled them in first with white. then I built on that with black and grey.

These are the paints that I have been using.

6/7.  Once I attached the vases to the candlesticks with E6000 epoxy, I used this Raffia to make bows around the sticks.

When everything was dry and secure, I filled them with a cheap bag of  "Jolly Time Pop Corn" (purchase by the bag) and then topped them off with a tea light in each one.

I really like the way that they turned out. I was excited to make them and I think it was a really fun project.

You can fill them them with whatever you want. Ideas, you ask? Candy Corn, Spanish Moss (minus the candles), Halloween spider webs and little plastic spiders, rubber snakes, the list goes on and on. Be creative!

At first I really painted the letters to be "Perfect" but, you really need vinyl letter for that look. The paint was a little tricky because it leaves little bumps in the paint as you add layers. Eventually I threw in the towel on perfection and just started mixing black and white and slopping it on. At the end I put them all side by side and decided that, I love it! Give it a try.... you cant beat a $6 dollar craft project. There is no reason not to try this, so get to it y'all!

Pumpkin Bouquet

I know, I've been slacking on getting my posts up. I'm leaving for several weeks to go back home and visit with my family. I only go once a year so its usually a long trip. Although I am super excited for this upcoming trip, I also have lots to do around the house before I leave. If you know me that means I need to decorate the house for the fall season. But the icing on the cake is that I am also decorating for Halloween before I leave because I wont be getting back until 2 weeks into October. And honestly, who wants to decorate the entire house for two weeks. Nope, not me. So I'm going to do it now so that when I get home I don't have to do anything but enjoy it.

Halloween is my husbands FAVORITE holiday! We do it up pretty big around our house. And we don't do the cutsie decorations either. There are a few of them but, for the most part it's creepy hanging ghouls and goblins, an armful of huge house climbing spiders, several skeleton pumpkin kings dressed in tattered gauze complete with chains hanging from their wrists. A graveyard in the front of the house, and a bunch of inflatable horse driven hearses and ghosts along with a 5 ft tall witch that stands gaurd at the front door and stirs her cauldron with her glowing eyes. I often tell my husband "The house is scary enough for kids to even think about coming to the door, so you shouldn't scare them further by being the scariest thing you can imagine!" but does he listen..... NOPE! One year he was dressed in an orange escaped convict jumpsuit and wore a Jason mask. He would walk out and not say a word to the kids, just stare at them in silence until their little knees wobbled in fear. Last year our house was SUPER CREEPY and he had prosthetic's made for his face so that he could be a zombie. It literally looked like flesh was falling off of his face. I tried to tell him to go easy on the ones that were obviously still too young for the fright of all hallows eve. But he still terrified the small tots, bless their little hearts. He thinks Halloween is to terrify and shock. That is his favorite part!

Anyway.... I'm trying my best to get the decorating done. I have a few projects that I'm still working on. This one isn't Halloween exactly but more of an autumn in general project. The best part is that it cost me a whopping $4 to complete.

I went to the Dollar Store and picked up this cute little pumpkin. It has a line around the middle of it, but I don't really care. They all had it but, what do you want for $1?  I took my exacto knife and cut around the top just like I would if I were carving a real pumpkin.

I expected this thing to be solid foam. I thought "I'm going to have to dig out the foam in order to do what I want with this little guy!" To my surprise it was hollow inside.

I flipped the top upside down and shoved it into the bottom of the pumpkin.

Then I grabbed some wire cutters from the hubbies shop and cut the stems of my dollar store flowers to the height that I needed them to be. I used the topper of the pumpkin that was now in the bottom of the hollow pumpkin as florist foam and just stuck the stems straight in there to keep them in place.

TA DAAA!!! Cute little pumpkin bouquet for my kitchen counter. I love it!! I may end up painting the pumpkin if in a couple days if it just feels too orange. But I don't know..... what do you think?
What if it was painted to look like grey stone or something. I don't know. Just an idea.

If I do paint it I will post a picture of the finished product. Until next time my lovely's!

Beautiful bow ties

It's been awhile since I have posted anything so I checked my phone for any pictures that I could turn into a quick tutorial. And what do you know, I had a little something to share!
I was in the mood for a tedious project a few months ago. Sometimes I need a project that puts me in full creative focus and that is all I focus on for awhile. Well I was inspired by these adorable bow tie necklaces that I kept seeing online. They weren't made from the pasta noodles but they looked just like them. They were colorful and delicate and I thought, ya know what, those would look darn cute in an apothecary jar!
And a project was born..... :)

You are going to need a couple of boxes of bow tie pasta and some craft paint in your favorite colors.

I waited patiently for my kids and my husbands bedtime so that I could start my project. Then I got started by pulling design inspiration from online and fabric patterns that I loved.

Like I said folks, this is a time consuming project. You need to be somewhat careful when handling the noodles. But the hard work pays off (at least I think so) look at how cute they are!

Now, I've only filled one jar so far but I plan on coming back to this project soon and filling the second jar. But I love the way they turned out! You could fill a decorative bowl with them, or put then in a cute jar, decorate a picture frame (and let the kids paint them). Lots of possibilities. :)

Well what do you think? I would love your feedback. Would you make these cute bow ties?

Until next time lovelys!

Apothecary jars

Okay I have been so busy planning Corbin's first big birthday party that I have been lacking in the blogging department. But I have a great tutorial for you. It was a lot of fun to make and I have received so many compliments on them.

First I bought these great candle holders at hobby lobby for 60% off! Amazing, right!? They are great as is but I knew I wanted to brighten them up.

I primed them with white and then let them dry. Then I did a thick coat of Bahamas blue craft paint.

Once everything was good and dry I went out to the garage and found this cool attachment for the drill.

Now you want to just pull up some of that paint in a few places. You can do this as much or as little as you wish.

This is how mine turned out.

If you don't own this glue then you should go and get some. Super strong and totally worth it. I used this to glue on my dollar store vases to the candlesticks.

Dollar store vase, please meet your new best friend the candle stick.

Really make sure you center your vase well so that your finished product isn't off centered.

These circles are from hobby lobby's wood craft isle. I also used them in my "fabulous picture frame knock off" tutorial. I purchased two finials from the same store and painted it al Bahama blue. On the under side I (and by that I mean my husband) created a groove on the bottom so that it would sit nicely on the vase and screwed the finial on.

Here they are all finished. I LOVE THEM!
I will probably end up putting some sort of protective coat on them in the future but for now this is how they are.

I'm in love love love! What do you think of the finished product?

I hope you try this out. Until next time my lovely's
